Husband arrested for alleged ault on stepson?

i called the police as my son said he hit and punched him, no visible marks but he ws very shaken up. since this happening he has obviously denied it and won't talk to me. i have tried his mother but she accuses me of getting him falsley arrested and says i've done wrong and won't speak to me. am i wrong to have called police?
