What are the best sockets to own?

I want to build a decent socket wrench collection to work on cars. I already have a basic 3/8" drive set and some common wrenches. I am not a professional mechanic. Just want to do my own auto repair and maintenance. What brands are good without spending a fortune (i.e. SK)?
