Does anyone else find the word "special" patronizing?

I have some mental problems, and I don't really like the term "special education" or "special needs". I mean, yeah it beats "retard" or "stupid" and it's certainly more accurate, but can't they come up with a new term, like let's say, "alternative accommodations" or "alternative needs" or something like that?
